Hypokalaemia
Information for breeders and owners
Why this is so important to the future of breeds using Burmese bloodlines
Burmese Hypokalaemia is an inherited disorder found in Burmese and Burmese related cats, which of course the Asian cat is. It is characterized by skeletal muscle weakness that can cause affected cats to have trouble walking and holding their heads correctly
As many of our members will know the Asian Cat Association (ACA) were actively involved with the research into Hypokalaemic Polymyopathy. Testing is via a simple mouth swab test which is available from the Langford Diagnostic Laboratories. Nr Bristol.
Details are on their web site at https://www.langfordvets.co.uk/diagnostic-laboratories/services/cat-genetic-testing/ and select Burmese Hypokalaemia.
